No, I'm not upset... Don't flatter yourself. I'm not the one using multiple exclamation points. You don't know what the city would, or wouldn't do. You can't say for sure it was done without a permit. You assume, because you don't like it. Plain and simple. Are you in this to win? I'm not, there's nothing to back down from. It's not a matter of win or lose, it's a matter of your not liking the signage. Why don't you approach the owner of the business and ask for yourself before you accuse them of being a scofflaw? |

Happy Fourth of July!
Just to add a little detail....with the demise of the Community Development department, where does a business owner go to get a permit for anything in Petaluma. That goes for homeowners who are installing fences or water heaters. There are many violiations taking place in Petaluma and the City Staff has bigger details to deal with like our public safety! What is that saying "Forgiveness is easier than permission"? If I remember correctly this was discussed by the Council members that voted against the demise of Community Development Dept. Have a safe and sane holiday! |

Towns- you can't see it from D st side- You have to be on Washington and then you will see the letters are as tall as the building. Check it out. The Corona(s) sound good though.
"You don't know what the city would, or wouldn't do. You can't say for sure it was done without a permit. You assume, because you don't like it." Um, actually I'm speaking from experience having owned two business in Petaluma and having had to have signage approved. Smart business people check these things out before spending thousands of dollars on a sign, or in this case...tens of dollars. But you are right, I don't like it. |

Well if you were to look the other direction you will see an old rotted train car with terrible graffiti. Weeds and dry grass. At least the sign is freshly painted and done neatly. Home painting and self reliance is the way to go these days. Glad to see someone is trying to survive in this economy. Props to them!

Saw it today, and I gotta say you're on you own on this one Doob. Nothin' offensive about it in my book. Long as they own the building, and maybe make it look a little more artistic, it really IS just like the Coca-Cola and Ghirardelli signs, only more home-spun (and confusing - it just says TOOL). But I've never had a problem with band flyers stapled to telephone poles either. Gang graffiti near school campuses however = zero tolerance.

"At least the sign is freshly painted and done neatly."
Not so. "...it really IS just like the Coca-Cola and Ghirardelli signs," No, it's not at all. Both are examples of historic signage. The point is, it is an illegal sign and is defined as such for a very good reason. How would it look if ALL the signs in town were homemade and 15 foot tall letters just because the owners wanted their business to stand out more? Why don't any of the other businesses in town use 15 foot tall letters? Because it is illegal. What makes this tool guy so special that he gets to have a GIANT illegal sign and does not have to follow the same rules that everyone else in town does? Why are there any rules about anything in Petaluma? Why have stoplights? I bet those of you on this board have better judgment on deciding when an intersection is safe to cross than a stupid old traffic light. So what is the purpose of a stoplight??? What is the purpose of a sign ordinance??? |

What's to say it won't BECOME historic. All it takes is time, my friend. That said, if it's illegal the city should be notified. How quickly they respond is anybody's guess.

If it bugs anyone that much, just go paint over it yourself.
I'm sure it's not a legitimate business owners advertisement for tools in a empty old barn(so you won't get in trouble). Stop complaining and be pro-active. |
||||
|
Sorry- you are wrong. A guy was in said barn selling tools over the weekend. Opposite end of barn was open for business.

Always the same with you Boop: big show, no results.

"Always the same with you Boop: big show, no results."
So, three pages of comments and on the front page for four days makes you say "no results"? Hmm..., sounds like you just might be a wee bit jealous compared to the drivel you post that disappears within an afternoon. I'm surprised that you haven't graffittized the sign to read: TOOL = WHIPPIS. |
||||
|
Give it 150 years Boop, it'll be historic by then. The old Ghirardelli advert was most likely hand painted, as well as the Coca Cola advert downtown. No reason to get down on the guy because his artistic abilities aren't up to your standards.
Solution: Take D Street. Unless of course you don't want to get stuck when the Historic D Street bridge goes up. |
||||
|
Ahh! If this is about the attention you're getting for being a troll, I suppose you got results. |
||||
|
I don't mean to get down on the guy for his business and I am not doing that; I wish him all the best with his business.
However, his ILLEGAL giant TOOLS sign with 15 foot high letters is an eyesore and is a prime example of why there is a sign ordinance. I'm sorry that you and the other four people here don't know any better regarding signage in our historic town. Your error in judgment on this subject throws a spotlight on all of the other stuff you write about. You are basically wrong about everything. This is no exception. |
