If I had known how long the delays were, I never would have gone to Sonoma on Thursday 8/20.
They are paving the long straight part of the road and the delay was very long. Most drivers turned off their engines for half an hour and many were frustrated and decided not to wait and thus turned around (unsafely).
Coming home was horrible. They detoured all traffic (hundreds of cars and trucks) down to Lakeville. Inching along all the way. But Lakeville was jammed also and trying to get a break in traffic to turn towards Petaluma was a nightmare.
Just a heads up if anyone is going over to Sonoma tomorrow (Friday) -- leave early -- they will still be paving.
It would have been nice to see some road work announcements on this site, or in the Argus.
At least you made it through! We have elderly relatives in Sonoma. When trying to get there tonight...the road is closed completely. When turning from Lakeville to Frates the traffic was backed up past the golf course. We didn't think much of it knowing what the traffic was like (as we traveled it last night) and based on your post. However, when we got to the T intersection of Frates and Adobe we were forced to turn left on Adobe Rd...back towards Petaluma. They had closed the road completely for the road work.
Now this wouldn't have been too much of a problem, had Lakeville to 116 not been at a complete stop. It took us 45 minutes to finally be able to get off of Lakeville and turn around at Browns Lane!
I can't think of a worse time to close the road! Indy Car races at Infinion, heavy weekend gets-aways, commute traffic, etc. There is NOTHING on the county website about the road being closed, nor was there a CHP onsite to ask questions to. When asking the workers for the name of their company, they refused to disclose it. For the record, we drove over there last night as well and while they did have the sign up about construction, there was NO NOTICE of the road being completely closed at any time.
Horrendous. No notice, no signs, no one directing traffic, horrible crowded detour, tempers flaring, absolutely infuriating.
My neighbor, a nurse at Sonoma Valley Hospital, was 40 minutes late for her shift. Had she had any advance notice she would have taken a different route or left earlier.
I can't even imagine how many drivers were late for their jobs, visits, doctor appointments, on both ends of this unnecessary traffic boondogle.
So that is what happen today! It was the worst ride home today. I can't believe there was not an accident at Stage Gulch. The south bound cars were turning in front of north bound traffic regardless if they were going to stop or not. CHP should have been directing traffic there. It took us over an hour from 37 to get home, and we too took Brown lane.
I had the same issues starting Wednesday night. When I went to work that a.m. I saw people around starting work, but there were no signs indicating there would be road work, what days/times, etc. When I came home that night, it took me almost 2 hours from Napa to Corona Road...how frustrating! On Thursday, I went out of my way to avoid this by going out past Sears Point to Hwy 37 and back onto Lakeville and home - but added an extra 20 minutes or so to my commute. This a.m. I was going my normal route and was stopped. When I asked the "flag" woman could I take the cut over from 116 to Adobe and avoid the closure she told me "I don't know - I'm from San Diegeo; but if you know a way around this I'd take it". I guess I'm stuck with an extra 20 minutes or more to my commute until this ends...when will that be? I don't know because the signage is not really clear! On Wednesday, by the time there was any signage, it just said "heavy traffic at Adobe...use alternate route" by the time there was NO alternate route except the 116 cutover that everyone was forced to use because of the road closure! Why didn't they post earlier warnings so everyone could plan??

Will some of you who regularly drive to Sonoma keep us posted on the roadwork? Thanks. We would also like to know who to contact about future roadwork projects.
Shouldn't the Argus -- our local paper -- have printed a warning about the Petaluma/Sonoma delays last week?
The lighted signs say that they will be still out there working thru 25th. All of the work trucks are still out next to the corner of Frates and I think Brown lane, nts. The road is really nice wish PTown had such nice roads.. this is a state run job so not sure that the paper has a crew just to let people know that they will be inconvenienced due to road work or a dui checkpoint. The SAN DIEGO company most likely did not want to pay extra to do the work at night which could have been done..one word AVOID
