Many people who seek alcohol and drug treatment often are steered to 12-step programs, which work for some, but not all. I am among who sought a program that would be more comfortable for me. I was pleased to discover that a nationwide recovery program call SMART Recovery is now operating in Sonoma County free of charge. This program is cognitively based as does not hold that alcohol/drug dependence is an incurable disease, but rather a treatable condition. Further, the program does not believe that individuals are "powerless" over their addiction; on the contrary they have the power to break the addiction.
