PETALUMA SPANISH-ENGLISH DUAL IMMERSION PROGRAM APPROVED BY OLD ADOBE UNION SCHOOL BOARD

An exciting new program has been officially approved to begin in the Fall of 2009 at the Bernard Eldridge Elementary School. Children enrolled in the new program will receive education in both English and Spanish allowing them to achieve literacy in both languages.

The program will begin with two Kindergarten classes and one First grade class. These children will receive an ongoing Dual Immersion education throughout their enrollment at Bernard Eldridge (grades K through 6th).

Parents who are interested in the program are encouraged to register with the Bernard Eldridge Elementary School asap.
The school is currently accepting enrollment for open spots in both the Kindergarten and First grade classes.

Students do not need to live within the Bernard Eldridge Elementary school attendance area. Students from out of district are encouraged to apply. If you live out of the area you may enroll your child by obtaining an Inter District or Intra District Attendance Agreement. You will receive this form when you register at Bernard Eldridge. Students will be served on a first come first served basis and by a waiting list if needed.

The benefits of dual immersion programs are many. Research has shown that this approach promotes high levels of academic achievement, bilingualism, and cross-cultural awareness. Fluency and literacy in a second language provide an economic advantage for students, while helping them become more open-minded and broadening their world perspectives. This program will help prepare our students to succeed within the global community of the 21st century

The link dodn't work.

Can anyone tell me if the kinder is full or half day and also the format for the immersion. Are the kinders 50/50 or 90/10 percent or what?

Fully institutionalized Kinder....I mean full day kinder. 90/10.

It is funny how the more school does for kids, the less parents do, and the more school has to do...the institution created its own demand!

And then of course since kids are in daycare... I mean school...all day then mom better get to some "real work" and then real wages go down, and then only the rich can afford a one income household...so we can't educate our own kids in the home and the community cause we have to work...so here we are in the same spot again.

Full day kinders are suck.

STAR doesn't measure intelligence, it measures complicity.

Didn't mean to indicate anything about the intelligence of the students. It is the standards that the schools are suppose to meet. They are not IQ tests. Tests the basics the school should meet for the students success. I'm not happy about the testing nor the amount of time it takes from lessons but it is all we have right now.

Isn't language one of the "basics"?

My child will be in the program this fall - and it's my belief that the school's scores will increase as a direct result of having the program.

The research I have read indicate that children who participate in programs such as this end up doing better in the long run.

So, no - I have to disagree that they "should be concentrating on the basics". I'd rather have my child get a better education and come out of a school with low test scores than a school with high scores and have a lousy education.
