This year Wilson Elementary School participated in a small schools basketball league. The team finished with a 5-1 record and tied for the mythical league championship. The league had six schools with a variety of teams. Some schools had enough 5th and 6th grade students to have separate Boy’s and Girl’s teams other schools had co-ed teams. The Wilson team this year had a mix of talent between the boys and girls.

The boys had good players on the inside and outside. Most of the scoring came from the guards. There was a good cross-section of abilities which made for interesting games against the other small schools. The girls that played made great progress from the beginning of the year to the end. They had strong inside play and the guards improved steadily throughout the season. Many of the students that played this year had never played sports until now. This was a great first experience for them.

The league is designed to promote sportsmanship and allow students to feel the excitement of representing their school. Another important part of the competition is the friendships that these students are making will carryover to their future school years when these schools meld together in junior high.
