Unfortunately, their great food fell victim to their increasing prices and lack of customer service. 2 People working the counter during the lunch hours created a 15-20 minute wait to get an $8 sandwich. Add a soft drink and chips, and that lunch just became $13. Sorry, but you priced yourselves out of the market. Their staff was always friendly, but just couldn't keep up with demand.

I will miss their #2 sandwich, but not their prices. I wish them well with their Novato location. It is a great place to stop to grab a bite to eat on your way out to Stafford Lake or Indian Valley, once or twice a year.

I ate there almost once a week and never waited more than a couple minutes. Only problem was people that couldn't comprehend the "take a number" system.

Oh well I will miss the eggplant parm. The new business will be a "cafe & deli" not sure how they will have better success, maybe they can draw in some of the Starbucks crowd.

I'm sure Subway coming in really helped their cause!!...not saying that was the "only" reason, just saying it probably wasn't the best neighbor to have a few spaces down.

That's truly a bummer. I have nothing but nice things to say about that place. And I never did get a chance to try one of their breakfast sandwiches..

Great food there, but I think they left...um....let me think for a minute here...well, because the Theatre district does not draw enough people to support the stores located there. You have to serve hundreds of sandwiches a day to make a place like that work given their high rent, not 50.

When Subway (yeech-dog food) realizes that they are not selling hundreds of sandwiches per day, they'll be gone too.

I heard there is another sandwich opening nearby (in the old Sooze location). It will be right next to Apple Box. Seems like a lot of sandwich shops in two blocks. I hope there are enough customers to keep them all open!

There are many reasons Tag's did not make it, but I believe Al is happy not to be here. He lives in Marin, he has another Deli there that is doing very well! Good for you Al, I wish you continued success. Parking as well as lack of foot traffic (Boop is partially right on this one) are definitely part of it. It certainly was not due to quality, the food there was good.

The new family going in has a wonderful menu, good pricing to compete with Subway and it is locally owned. We, as a town, will have to support them, in this economy it is tough but with the right combination of price and service it is doable. Too many people making sandwiches at home? You do what you have to, to survive, can't blame people there.

I, for one, am excited to try their breakfast menu, I will be there and wish them the best of luck.

one thing that always stuck with me when i was in there was an experience i had a couple years ago with the flies. made for a disgusting place to eat my lunch and i never went back. when i'd walk by the front window i'd check inside to see if there were any dead ones next to the canned displays and sure enough there were. that totally grosses me out and is a reason why i don't go to Central Market anymore either...just look on the sill next to the front windows at CM...
i love and support local businesses, but am not going to be grossed out in the process.

Eeeeeewwww.....there's no excuse for dead flies in windowsills! Their housekeeping and cleanliness needs improvement!

Another "fly story" which has become one of our family memories:

About 15 years ago we went to a local restaurant and our son was about 10 years old. When he opened his menu there was a HUGE smashed bloody dead horsefly smack in the middle of the menu. Then the rest of the meal turned out to be pretty horrible also.

We NEVER went back!

I won't state the name of the restaurant because it is still open.

Over the years we have all had many laughs over that we joked many times: "Be a good boy or we'll take you to _______ Restaurant!" LOL

Thanks for the shout out Will. That entire area could use quite a bit more foot traffic. In fact, the whole downtown could do with more foot traffic. Maybe Basin St could lower the rents and try and get a few service oriented shops in there to improve the foot traffic.

What I see with the new superstore Target center (380,000 sq ft) is that it will be pulling even more people away from downtown, thus hurting the businesses that are already there. How many new small businesses will there be in the Target center? 10? 20? We are going full bore to maim and injure the existing base of businesses downtown. Being thrown under the bus an all. I'm surprised that no one can see that coming...

Boop, get back on topic, this is restaurant topic site not boop soup talk.. maybe 360 can add a column just for boops..

Did not know about Tag's deli..never heard of the place. Maybe advertise a litte in the local paper or on this site..

Great sandwiches are at Michaels Sourdough, Lombardi's both located North of Downtown and then there is Mr. Pickles..

Actually, it was 100% right on topic. Sometimes when I put too many words in a post it is hard for you ladies to understand. My apologies for using too many big words for you.

I guess that you are the only person in Petaluma to not drive on Pet Blvd between C and D streets and notice that deli that was there for what, 4 years? You are a shining star...NOT.
