Hello fellow Petalumans;

Am I the only one concerned about the thirty to fifty men standing around waiting for work on the corner of Howard St and Western Ave? How many of those men are illegal immigrants? How come the Petaluma Police Department doesn't find out? Just asking.

It's an unfortunate situation. They offer cheap labor and contractors and residents need cheap labor done on that day that most citizens refuse to do for 10 dollars an hour.

My concern is that the gas station loses a lot of potential business with these workers loitering. Unfortunately hiring them is illegal and having police harrass them is only going to take the problem elsewhere into territories that they can't watch.

Unless these workers are causing harm then they will be left alone. There is much less work nowadays so they will likely dssappear or head back to Mexico since the local job outlook is not so well.

They toss their garbage to the ground, urinate behind the building, ogle and make sexually inappropriate comments to women. No one wants to go to a place that allows it to happen.

You're assumption that "most citizens" won't take work for $10 is false and insulting. They're picked up because people are to lazy to do their own work on their houses, and contractors who don't want to pay workers comp insurance or taxes. That's your problem, not the American Citizen who needs a job.

Then call I.C.E. and get rid of them and anyone hiring them. It just takes a phone call and persistence to solve an apparent problem.

I have not witnessed their actions firsthand except driving through at lunchtime for gas where there were only a few loitering so if this is an issue. Then make your voices heard where it matters. Blogging doesn't solve anything but it helps raise awareness. I suspect they might pay royalties to the gas station for not complaining about loitering/littering/harrassment.

well at least they will work! the dirty "bum" kids fishin' for change in and around putnam plaza are the ones that bother me. i heard a dude call putnam plaza: petaluma's little tenderloin. you got porn. pipes. tattoos. a prostitute. and im sure you can ask anybody who looks like a "junkie" or a "tweeker" where to get any drug from oxy pills to meth. you wanna clean up petaluma you can start there. there is a reason that they hang down there...because they aren't allowed anywhere else. A MESSAGE TO THE BUMS- GET A GUITAR AND SING SONGS ABOUT BEER. maybe working for your change will give you some self respect.

I used to live on Howard directly across from the Shell station. My biggest complaint while living there was the fact that I would come home to numerous wrappers and soda bottles that had blown our way onto our lawn and driveway. I do wish they would clean up their mess and at least use the trash cans at the gas station.

The local Food Not Bombs has come out many times to provide some hot meals and other amenities to the day laborers which I personally think its a novel idea. What the men need is food, too bad they can't take home extra to their families. After moving down the street a bit and around the corner on Western I do have to say it is nice not to have to pick up someone else's litter.....

Maybe there is no solution to this...who knows

Instead, how about those Food not Bombs people take some food to citizens of their own country who are unemployed, homeless and/or starving? And, yes, there is a solution to this ... it's called enforcing the law of the land which says that these people are here il legally.

Bully Defender, I agree with you that its our problem - some of our citizens must be hiring these guys for cash only, outside of the law. I don't understand why the Shell and 7-11 owners don't call the police. Is there an ICE station (?) anywhere in Sonoma County?

What would be the point of deporting them? They will be right back here tomorrow. At least they want to WORK something I can't say about many AMERICANS.

I intentionally don't buy gas at that station, nor do I buy food at the convenience store across the street because of the ill egals who hang out in the parking lots. I take my money elsewhere.

Food Not Bombs has been providing food for the homeless/starving for going on 6 years now. They have locations all over Sonoma County and around the Bay Area. The Petalumca chapter usually holds meals on Sunday evenings in Walnut park and various other days of the week around Petaluma.

Don't feed them and don't give them work. They will leave sooner than you might imagine for someplace where they can find work and food.

Pretty simple really.

I applaud their effort; but there are still local American citizens (men, women, and children) who go hungry. So, FNB people are obviously taking food out of these mouths and feeding "the folks" on the corner.

I have to agree with Logic, yes they are feeding homeless and hungry. But they could be feeding more of them if we were not wasting it on the illegals.

All they are doing is giving them more reasons to stay. Like the proverb, teach them to fish!

Not everything they give out is purchased, many people donate to them. I stop donating when I found out they were feeding the illegal workers. There are other places I can give my money or food, that will go to people who are here legally and deserve it.
