Dutra Materials continues to fight to build an Asphalt Plant across the river from Shollenberger Park. Their latest proposal would reduce the height of silos, and eliminate on-site crushing of recycled materials. The proposal will be back before the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors on December 8th. More information will follow in time.
The plant will still exceed noise standards, release carcinogens and destroy scenic vistas. Only five fulltime staff will be needed to run the facility and since almost all of its business will be with the state, little sales tax revenue generated. Other plants in the county could produce the asphalt needed by CalTrans according to the Environmental Impact Report. The Petaluma River Council, Moms for Clean Air and many other groups (including the PWA)oppose the plant. Fighting Dutra requires a lot of money, however, including the services of an outside legal firm expert in environmental issues. Moms has produced a book - 50 SHOLLENBERGER BIRDS for a donation. Many of the photographs you see in the slide series below are in the book and all the art has been donated. The most popular version of the book is hardcovered and 8" X 8". It is not available commercially but only through us. If interested in details, email nrdyer@comcast.net. It would make a great Christmas gift for anyone who loves the park and/or is a "birder", and copies will be signed by the photographer. |
