The heron/egret colony on the Dutra property and across the river from Shollenberger Park has been one of the focal points in the debate over the proposed asphalt and recycling facility. Three park docents track activity at the colony for the Cypress Grove Research Center, Audubon Canyon. While not all the young have fledged, we have a good count of how many healthy chicks were produced this season. The count is 74 - 2 Snowy Egrets, 8 Great Blue Herons and 64 Great Egrets. We expect some chicks will remain in the colony through July and will make easy (and interesting) viewing from the Shollenbergert trail next to the river, if you have binoculars.
