As a result of our drought, last summer the freshwater channels at Shollenberger park became totally dry for the first time in memory. The channels are the home of the native Western Pond Turtle (a species of concern). Apparently, most of the turtles "estivated", awaiting the return of water. With the recent rains, the channels have water again and we have sighted five turtles, and expect to see more when we get sun (these are basking turtles). Rain is important in many ways. The Western Pond Turtle is the animal of the week and is added to the slide series below.
