Does anyone know what Benefits the People of the City of Petaluma pay for the City Council and Mayor?
I heard that they get lifetime health care after serving. Is this true? -M |

Looks like the Mayor gets $10/year in salary and council members get $5/year:
Link That's quite the decrease, when the city was incorporated in 1913 the mayor got $600/year and the council members got $150. The original city charter. And that was when $600 was actual money. I'm still looking on benefits, so far I haven't found mention of the council members or mayor receiving any such things. Lifetime health care for a 4 year term would be a huge line item, we'd have more ex council members than employees, so I'd expect it to stand out if it existed. Thus I'm pretty sure the city council members get little more than a handshake and a thank you. It's on my longer-term list to go through the city budget more thoroughly and build some tools to understand it. |

The council gets $3.00 per meeting and the Mayor $5.00 per. I think that they get health care for as long as they're on the council. Yes we paid for Mike O'Brien's heart bypass surgery. Years ago, the council voted themselves lifetime health benefits but that was rescinded.
To a certain extent, they are allowed reimbursement for expenses incurred while doing their civic duties. I do not know what those limitations are. On a separate but related note, Mike Kerns will receive full retirement benefits from the county. This kicked in after he started his third term. He also will get full retirement benefits from the City of Petaluma from his years in the police department. |
