Cape Cod Red Sunflowers by PINS (created on )Gallery | Comments
Last year we planted sunflower seeds sent to us by friends in Cape Cod. The "parent plants" originated from seeds that fell out of a beach bird feeder. We were told that they would grow about 4 ft high and produce red sunflowers. I gave it a shot and sure enough, they grew to about 6 ft here in Petaluma. They produced several large red sunflowers from which I harvested seeds for this year. This year the first plants hit about 8 ft in height and finally produced the first or "Alpha" Flower on August 13. I had to get on top of a 6 ft stepladder and hold the camera over my head to take the photos. Two days later I did it again and the flower had fully opened. Fortunately, the plant--as well as the rest of the sunflowers--has buds developing at much lower levels.
