Since when did Grant School become a dog park? Aren't there enough dog parks in Petaluma already? Hasn't the City of Petaluma provided enough of these designated areas for your pets? The sad thing about it is that this is a Elementary School where our kids attend and play on the field during school hours (as well as after hours). It's terribly irresponsible for adults to take their dogs to a school and let them roam freely and use it as a litter box! Enough is Enough
It seems some dog owners feel all school fields are a public domain. Petaluma High, Petaluma Junior High, and Valley Vista are all regular spots for these folks.
When they are approached and asked to leave they react as if you are asking their children to leave. Yet signs are posted that have specific language, which prohibit animals on school grounds.
Please remember, the children of these schools are playing on fields that dogs are using as a bathroom. These irresponsible dog owners simply don't care.
I say call animal control and have these jerks cited. What they are doing isILLEGAL!

I share your frustration regarding dogs running amuck on school fields. We have the same situation at McNear Park's athletic field. Dogs are so tough on the turf (holes dug and litter left) that it has become a field of last resort for our youth. When I coached there, I would walk the field and mark off the holes to avoid injuries- more often than not I ran out of cones!

Don't bother trying to talk tho these people- if you see a dog in palce it is not supposed to be or off leash when it is required call the police and animal control. Eventually the city and the irresponsible owners will get the message that this is unacceptable.

No, they won't. Many dog owners are not thoughtful people. I was on a pleasant walk yesterday with my husband. A couple with two Rotweiler's on leashes were approaching. I am not a dog lover or hater. I would prefer to keep my distance and not have a Rotweiler or any other dog brushing up against me. We moved to go single file as they passed. They kept on walking with their Rotweiler's 4 abreast. What is one to do in this situation? I had to move off the sidewalk to let them pass. I've had dogs jumping on me, defecating repeatedly in my front yard, barking at all hours of the day and night in the 25 years I have lived here...I guess dogs have become more important than people or manners.
School is back in session, soccer games are on a roll and the Grant School Field remains a dog park!!!!! Thank you dog owners for being disrespectful to our children and for letting your unattended dogs do their business on the lawn while you sit back and talk amongst the other disrespectful dog owners. How terrible is it that during recess if our kids step in this stuff they have to go back to class with this on their shoes? Come on people take your dogs to the designated DOG PARKS and let them do their thing there!
I realize you're fed up and rightfully so, but you'll catch more flies with honey than vinegar.
Could the school and/or the soccer club collect plastic shopping bags and install some sort of home made dispensers around the campus to make it easier for people to do the right thing? And maybe a container to deposit the pick ups in? Kid lettered signs asking dog owners to "Please scoop the poop" might start to chip away at this problem. Hopefully the soccer teams are running all their trash to the dumpster at the end of the day anyway so this could be win win.

I was always under the impession that dogs are never allowed on a school ground..is there an intelligent city employee out there in cyber world that can tell us the facts.. I have a dog and kids. I do not bring my dog to a school.. I see signs on several schools stating NO dogs, animals,BIKES, SKATES, BOARDS allowed on school property. Why should a soccer or school supply these plastic bags. Come on people be responsible for your actions..and your dogs..
Dogs are NOT allowed on school grounds EVER (unless they're a guide dog). Let me just say that there are 3 signs posted before entering the school grounds that specifically say "UNAUTHORIZED VEHICLES & ANIMALS ARE PROHIBITED ON THESE GROUNDS ~ SECTION 21113 OF THE CALIFORNIA VEHICLE CODE" I don't know how much more clearer it needs to be stated. And why should we make it easier for dog owners by putting out bags for them to pick up their poop. Before school ended this past summer, children from the YMCA made signs and posted them on the fence stating for dog owners to clean up. Even after that there were still dogs doing their thing. Now that is sad. Why are there always two sets of rules that apply ~ yours & everybody elses? And for the record, I am NOT a dog hater, I just don't understand why owners can't bring their dogs to designated areas that have been specifically dedicated to dog owners. We pay taxes on these parks so why can't dog owners use them. Maybe what we should do is have our kids take over the dogs parks for playtime and leave our garbage behind for them to clean up and see how they feel. Having a dog is a priviledge, therefore be respectful and keep your dogs out of our schools. It's ILLEGAL!!!

So before you scream at people maybe get informed. As for litter, I'm sure YOUR kids never EVER drop a food/candy wrapper on the ground right? Give me a break. Yes people should pick up after their dogs, but please get off your high horse, public schools and parks are paid for by dog owner's taxes the same as yours, they are allowed to use the facilities just as much as you as long as they follow the rules.
I must start by saying you simply did not properly read the document contained in the link you provided.
McNear Park is not a school, the athletic fields next to the park are not part of the school. All locations listed in the document are City Parks; not Public Schools.
If you read a post above it clearly states Section 21113 prohibits dogs on school grounds, PERIOD. (Please look around for the numerous signs posted.)
As for your comparision of food and candy wrappers to a pile of dog waste, PATHETIC.
I would say you are quite delusional and self serving if you think your tax money entitles you to break the law.
It seems you are in fact the one who needs to get informed...

In response to WALK2K, obviously you're one of those dog owners who takes their dog to schools.... where it is illegal! My whole point is that it is ILLEGAL to bring your dogs to schools PERIOD. I too pay tax dollar not only for schools but for the designated dog parks. And thank you for clarifying the appropriate areas for dogs to be at. Guess what ~ those listed are PARKS ~ not schools!!! And I so very much agree with OB1 about the litter vs. dog waste!!! There is no comparison and no excuse. Simply said ~ dogs are not allowed on school grounds. I have an idea ~ why don't you step in your dogs waste and have to go back to class with stinky shoes. Better yet, why don't you roll in it and have to go back to class. Boy doesn't that sound fair to that poor kid. I would much rather roll or step on a wrapper of garbage that into dog waste. And for the record, my children DO NOT LITTER because my husband and I have raised our children not to litter, not just for the environment, but also out of good ol'plain RESPECT!
Sorry walk2 but I don't see any schools on this link that YOU sent to this site..NO DOGS ALLOWED ON SCHOOL PROPERTY UNLESS THEY ARE FOR THE BLIND ONLY..Sorry for yelling RP, but it does suck to step into poop..right walk2
