The Safeway store has expanded their Cartronics cart control system to a perimeter around the store.
Finally, the system is fully operational and limits the ability to push a shopping cart beyond a certain perimeter in the parking lot. This should dramatically cut down on the stray Safeway carts in the surrounding neighborhoods--not to mention their cost of replacing stolen carts. Unfortunately, some "escaped" before the system was fully deployed. However, this will soon be corrected.
A BIG HUZZAH TO SAFEWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wonder if the new Raley's store will be similarly equipped? Fear not, I will be covering their opening...camera at the ready. Stay tuned!
I applaud trying to keep carts out of creeks and neighborhoods, but almost every time I go into Safeway the buzzers go off for their system, and not for the right reasons. I hope they work the bugs out soon.....

Unfortunately, the carts can't be taken into the parking lot that used to be used by Mervyn's. There were several carts abandoned there yesterday. When the lot by Safeway is full, the old Meryn's lot is a great place to park and it is unfortunate that the carts can't be taken over there.

You have pointed out a drawback. Normally, shopping centers set up a perimeter around the entire lot and put all the cart stores under the system. If there is not agreement by all the cart stores to participate, then a store has to pick a defense line. The Plaza has several cart stores--Longs, Trader Joes, Ross and K-Mart. And of course, Raley's is coming with their carts. Insofar as I know, there are no plans to control the carts at the Plaza.
I've written about this to a fare thee well. See Link and See Link
