Did you get your summer Petaluma Park & Rec Activity Guide? See page 12. Whose great idea was it to cut down the time of Recreational Swim to only two hour increments??? How ridiculous. The pool is open only part of the year. Now they are basically telling us what time we have to be there to get our two hours in. Well, this WILL be the DEATH of our Swim Center. What a shame.
The city is going to close the pool anyway to allow for the redevelopment of the Kenilworth tract. Reducing the hours to the point of inconvenience will make many people with attention spans similar to gnats forget all about the pool in short order.
That way the city will hear less sniveling when it's bulldozed.

Actually the swim center and skate park are not a part of the new development; there was some talk of that but the developer decided paying to move the pool somewhere else was too expensive. So it will stay in place on Washington.
I also heard the city will be keeping the Washington site (for the time being). But with the new schedules, pool usage will be dropping. They are forcing you to arrive at 12:30 OR 2:30 p.m. (to get your two hours worth in). What if you would rather get there at 1:30 or 2:00? Many reasons, including lunch, baby's naps, etc. Also, hopefully they will keep the pool areas/lawn areas CLEANER this year. And play some music! Make it fun!
I like to swim, but the hours are way too limited. Why are there no evening hours? For a city this size, the pool should be OPEN and not so restricted.
It just doesn't make sense to drive all the way to Santa Rosa just to swim. We have a beautiful pool here at the Swim Center -- they should include some evening hours and a longer open schedule.
What happened to Family Swim Night at the Swim Center?
Why aren't there any community parties or barbecues at the Swim Center?
Why is this gem not promoted? I don't recall seeing even one photo of kids swimming in this year's Argus!
Why not make it more like the old Marin Town and Country Club in Fairfax in "the olden days". That place was so much FUN.
It just seems like the management has taken all the FUN away. There used to be MUSIC and a SNACK BAR and and DIVING BOARDS and lots of kids and families using the Swim Center.
If the city's pools are privatized, maybe some good changes will be implemented. They have to keep it affordable and fun. It would be nice to have some community input to see what swimmers would like.
It seems that once again the City could forever change the meaning of “Community.”
I feel the “privatization” of the community pools is certainly not the best solution. After countless swim lessons for kids over the years, with the reasonable rates they charge; fees will now triple under private ownership?
Should we hand over other programs to private industry because the City fails to properly manage them?
Does anyone want to take over the latitude and longitude signs the City hung up with our tax dollars?
How about the large black trash cans that dot the street corners? (You know the often tagged and filthy ones.)
Maybe the other black cans that hang from poles on the sidewalks, ones that started out as recycle on the left, and “waste” on the right. (It seems now the “waste” ends up in both sides, maybe because the lettering for “waste” and “recycle” are now gone.)
How about the large concrete planters that were bolted to the sidewalks? You know the ones that ended up as ashtrays and demolition targets? (Oh, I forgot to mention dog urinals.)
Let’s not forget the sidewalk resurfacing, which has now crumbled away in many spots.
Certainly the big money spent on Water Street has not gone unnoticed. It’s a great place to go on warm evenings with the hoards of underage citizens drinking, smoking, and doing whatever they want. (Oh and of course the occasional fight nights.)
Of course let’s not forget the fact that I just replaced the front end of my truck, after 8 years of Petaluma’s famous potholes. (You think KFC is going to fix them?)
Petaluma is a great town, but poorly managed by the City, and it shows.

We hope the new operations at the Swim Center will make it FUN again. It would be nice if they asked for community input, suggestions, ideas and comments.
I love it here, wrinkles and all. I like the City Council too. I am bummed about the privitization of the pools though. Why didn't the council just raise the class prices themselves?
